Mental disorders significantly contribute to the overall burden of disease, with conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia being one of the leading causes of disability. Despite this, no biochemical test has been implemented for the diagnosis of these mental disorders. Our scientific team proposes a blood-lipidomics-based method for testing mental disorder risk. Based on data collected from than 2500 blood samples of patients with mental disorders and healthy individuals, we developed a predictive model that is able to differentiate patients with a psychiatric diagnosis (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder) from healthy individuals, and is able to detect individuals with severe signs of depression from the general population. More than 1000 volunteers from the Moscow population have already been tested using our lipid-based technology. We are further working on improving our method to scale the technology to a clinically applicable test.

The detection of lipids in blood plasma that are associated with mental disorders makes it possible to reliably diagnose diseases and objectively evaluate the effectiveness of therapy. In my opinion, this is a revolution. This will help to avoid incorrect diagnosis, and select the right therapy faster. The project may also have great social significance, since we will have to provide rehabilitation for the participants of the spa military operation in the future, and the methodology allows us to identify, among other things, PTSD and depression.

The world's first technology for diagnosing mental disorders by blood analysis. Thanks to this new diagnostic technique, doctors will be able to identify risks in healthy people and prescribe therapy in a timely manner.

RSF grants at Skoltech are administered by 2 people. This is Manager Natalia Kalinina manager and Finance analyst Evgenia Sabitova. The full cycle: filing an application, signing documents, submitting a report, auditing, closing a project has been done by 2 people for 5 years. At Skoltech, everyone who applied for or worked on RSF grants knows these people. I know for sure that any supervisor or contact person of the grant is happy that all issues are resolved inside one room. My employees cannot receive bonuses from grants - this is prohibited in 99% of cases. But I really ask you to recognize their work as important and give them a certificate. During their entire time at Skoltech, 164 grants from the RSF alone have passed through their hands. This means that more than 1,000 applications have been submitted.

Skoltech is finishing on an exciting experiment − the Kapitsa.AI media project. Over the course of six months, the project team was created a digital twin of Sergey Kapitsa, a renowned Russian physicist and science popularizer. Creating a digital twin is a challenging engineering task that involves finding AI solutions for the avatar, synchronizing and optimizing them for the project. The development process was documented on the project’s pages on and. The project was supported by a grant from the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The digital avatar is incorporate many different AI solutions. Some generated images, others synthesized speech, others mimicked emotions, body movements and facial expressions, timbre and intonation, and still others orchestrated it all. Consisting of several shared facilities, operational management block as well as research service facility block, the team of Research facilities center (~50 people as of end of Nov'24) has become an ever-important structural division of Skoltech, supporting research, educational and innovative activities at Skoltech as well as showcasing Skoltech's reputation and professional competences outside. In research domain RFC team works closely together with CREIs and project centers by providing best in class services to them as well as acting as collaborators in their research. Educational activities are supported by facilities throughout entire lifetime of student's curriculum, starting from Innovation workshop (top1 in student's survey over the last 2 years), continuing with their ISP and various courses and up to their graduation. Innovative activities are supported by startup zone at FabLab, mechanisms for providing access to research infrastructure at CREIs and project centers as well as discounted rates for shared facilities.
As a result of its activites, RFC consistently exceeds its KPI on attracted external funding (by more than 50% in 2024) and becomes more solid contributor to Skoltech's overall performance.

Since joining Skoltech as a PhD student in 2019, Dr. Julijana Cvjetinovic has made remarkable contributions to enhancing Skoltech’s visibility and reputation on both national and international levels through her dedication to science, education, social engagement, and public outreach.

1. Representing Skoltech at events:
• Dr. Cvjetinovic has represented Skoltech at over 15 international conferences, including the prestigious Global Young Scientist Summit in Singapore, where she was the only representative from Russia to deliver an oral presentation and engage directly with 9 Nobel laureates and 10 other distinguished speakers.
• She was a participant in the 4th Eurasian Women’s Forum in Saint Petersburg, where she actively participated in: thematic session: "Women Scientists – Leaders in the Scientific and Educational Sphere", teleconference: "Women in Science and Technological Entrepreneurship" connecting colleagues from Russia and Serbia, highlighting Skoltech’s collaborative spirit, TED Talk: "Technological Startups by Women: From Development to Implementation".

2. Initiating and supporting educational, social, and cultural projects:
• Dr. Cvjetinovic works as teaching assistant at two courses form 2020 and PQM program coordinator, fully supporting educational processes at Skoltech.
• She actively participates in volunteering events aimed at attracting new students (Open Doors events), science popularization events (What Festival, Saturday with Light, etc).
• Her contribution with the short movie to the Skoltech almanac "16 Ways to Change the World" (2022) highlighted the impact of Skoltech research on global challenges.
